Can't wait for the sequel!

No budget...? No problem!!

ACTING: As with the usual low / no budget indies, the expectations for oscar worthy performances are pretty low. The cast of Zombie Apocalypse was a nice surprise. While there are a few actors that may want to consider other career choices (or at least, some acting lessons) pretty much everyone held their own and it was clear that they had fun doing it.

PRODUCTION: Another pleasant surprise. This is one of those films that realizes it doesn't have millions of dollars at its disposal and embraces it. The script is pretty good considering it originally was separate episodes meshed together into a full length feature (I did notice a few things continuity-wise and plot-wise that vanished thanks to the meshing). The sound production and background music is great, the make up, blood & gore is pretty good and the special effects aren't bad.

ZOMBIES: The good, the bad and the ugly! The make up for the zombies was really good. The zombies were the usual eclectic bunch. Walkers, runners, shamblers, they're all here. One thing that caught my attention was at first the zombies need to have their brains destroyed to be stopped, then later, it seems anything goes as a way to destroy the zombies.

THE CAUSE: Not really clear about this. Some sort of infection.

NUDITY: None.

FINAL: Overall, what can I say? This was a fun, action packed zombie adventure. It would be nice to see what the director and his production team could do with some serious cash. I hope that a distributor picks this up as it deserves to be seen and enjoyed by all of us zombie aficionados and those just looking for for an action filled adventure.

RATING: 4 out of 5

A cut above the rest

One thing that sets this movie apart from many other ultra-low budget zombie outings is the sound design. It's crisp and clear and the dialog is very audible. (Sound effects are by the way a bit over the top, but it's consistent and probably intentional.) There is, however, at least one exception as the movie maker had to re-record the dialog for one particular scene. One character, the bad-ass reluctant hero type, is over-dubbed (with a fake Mexican accent) through-out the entire movie with unintentionally hilarious results. The actor himself isn't terrible by any means, but the role should have been casted to someone a bit older and perhaps more bad-ass to be entirely believable. He's counterpart, the movie's villain, is much more believable even though he's equally young. The young cast is a bit of a problem because most roles seem to be the same demographic (minus one or two minor characters and some of the zombie extras). Luckily it's not a complete sausage fest since a number of female roles have been cast also. The movie's main protagonists, a couple of college roommates, are luckily well cast and play their roles and deliver their lines with total credibility. It's really difficult to nit-pick on any of the acting because the movie starts off with a disclaimer as to the acting...

The story isn't anything we haven't seen before in zombie movies, but since the background is never fully explained it's hard to comment the zombie concept itself. In fact the movie consists of two shorter episodes edited together to make a feature length movie, but there seems to also have been a third episode that didn't make it into the final cut. Perhaps more would have been revealed there? This method of movie making does have it's pitfalls though, as continuity becomes an issue. For example, the two separate short films are shot in different formats, making it necessary to change the aspect ratio of the first portion of the movie.

The zombies themselves also seem to be less than consistent, as it's clearly stated in the first portion of the movie that their brains must be destroyed, but later on they go down for the count for any number of reasons. Speaking of the zombies the make-up effects are actually pretty good and the gore is very passable. The special effects as a whole are a mixed bag though, but it never ends up hurting the movie. Even if the movie maker really didn't have all the necessary resources at his disposal, it's very apparent what his vision or intention was. The script does suffer a bit being split into two separate stories, and missing the third and final installment, but the dialog is for the most part very well written (even if some of the delivery is less than believable). There are also some plot holes but the one thing missing entirely from the story is the apocalyptic scope of events, but I guess it's implied by the movie's title. (Non-zombie movie fans could easily miss this though.)

The movie is however well directed and, at times, beautifully shot. It's really a action movie at it's hearth and those sequences come off very intense as the editing is also tight. Even if some locations are a bit mundane one could only wish that all these amateur/independent zombie movies were this well produced!

Really Good Film

I really enjoyed this film. It never takes itself too seriously. For example, at the start, the film has a warning about blood and gore. It also mentions the b-grade acting. Okay, the acting won't win any awards, but it's not that terrible. I was amused by the machete-wielding hero who tries to sound like Dirty Harry or something--that voice affectation was quite amusing. And it did work perfectly, especially if you are just expecting b-grade acting. The make-up is good, but it is a little sparse at times--not a surprise given a low budget and lots of zombies running around. The gore scenes are very effective and well done. The final battle was well done as well. It was well made and shows that low budget films can be really good if some effort is put into them.

I give this film 8 out of 10.
