Introduction

They can be walking corpses, enslaved by Voodoo master to do their bidding. They might appear as mind-controlled slaves of scientists, aliens, or some other evil force. They may be depicted as reanimated bodies possessed by demonic powers. They may also be the animated remains of long vanished members of ancient societies, seeking vengeance for the desecration of their tombs. They can also, most popularly, be undead corpses who feed on the flesh of others.

One word has been used to describe all of these different forms of beings: Zombie.

The origins of the zombie lay in the religious practices of Voodoo, and these account for the earliest depictions of the zombie in cinema. Movies such as White Zombie or I Walked With A Zombie depict these creatures as being under the control of a Voodoo master (who usually gets his or her comeuppance at the end). However, zombies have also appeared as mind-controlled people in such films as The Manchurian Candidate. Films such as the Mummy series of Universal and Hammer present the zombie in yet another form. Demons reanimate corpses in the wildly popular Evil Dead series or in films such as Demon Wind. The type of zombie that most viewers are familiar with appeared in George Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead. Since Romero's zombies first shambled into movie theaters in the late 1960's, horror cinema has never been the same. The number of films that Romero zombies appear in number in the hundreds.

In late summer 2001, I decided to watch every zombie movie ever made. Naively, I believed this must be an easy task. After all, how many movies could the living dead appear in? As I write this, almost three years later, the accumulation of potential zombie movies stands at over 2000 with many more to be obtained in the future.

The creators of The Zombie Movie Database want to provide a website that will attempt to accumulate every appearance by zombies (whatever form they may take) in films from around the globe. This website will contain movies where zombies dominated the entire picture to films where the living dead only appear for a few minutes. In some entries, such as those concerning the Chinese hopping zombie/vampire, the staff of ZMDB will comment on the unique forms that zombies take in various countries and give the reasons for these inclusions.

One thing that the staff of ZMDB wants to do, however, is to open this site to the participation of other zombie fanatics from around the world. Therefore, you will notice that anyone can "add a movie." Your entry will be examined by the staff of ZMDB for accuracy, but, in most cases, approval is almost a 100% certainty. The only thing we do request, however is that any films you enter must fulfill three qualifications:

1. The movies must be complete.

2. The films must have been released on either VHS, DVD, or VCD at some point.

3. The movies must still exist (no lost films).

Hopefully, by adhering to these three points, no one who uses this website will be sent on fruitless quests to find movies that do not exist or are gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.

We hope everyone enjoys The Zombie Movie Database.
